Gold Plated vs Solid Gold: What's the Difference?

A solid gold chain and a gold plated chain can look almost identical in a photo, yet one costs thousands and the other under $100. Here's what's really different, so you can decide what's worth it for you.

What "solid gold" means

Solid gold jewelry is gold alloy all the way through. The karat tells you how much of it is pure gold: 24K is almost pure, 18K is 75% gold, and 14K is about 58% gold, with other metals added for strength. Because you're paying for the metal itself, the price rises with the weight of the chain and the price of gold. A solid 14K gold 5mm figaro chain at 22″ was listed at $4,000 by a national jewelry retailer when we checked in September 2026.

What "gold plated" means

Gold plated jewelry has a layer of real gold bonded over a different base metal. You get the color and shine of gold without paying for gold all the way through. That's why a plated chain costs a small fraction of a solid one.

Not all plating is equal: PVD vs. electroplating

Most gold plated jewelry is electroplated: the piece is dipped in a liquid gold bath and an electric current deposits a thin layer on the surface. It looks great at first, but that layer sits on top of the metal and can rub off with daily wear.

PVD (physical vapor deposition) is a newer process, also used on watches. Inside a vacuum chamber, the gold is turned into vapor and bonded to the surface. The result is a harder, more even finish that holds its color through everyday wear much longer than traditional plating.

Every Dubai Collections piece is finished in real 14K, 18K or 24K gold using PVD. It is still plated jewelry, not solid gold, so a little care goes a long way (see below), and our 12-Month Replacement Guarantee covers the finish either way.

Why the base metal matters

What's under the gold decides how a plated piece holds up. Cheap plated jewelry often uses brass or copper, which can tarnish and turn your skin green when the plating wears. Most Dubai Collections pieces are built on 316L stainless steel, which doesn't rust and won't turn most skin green. Every product page lists exactly what that piece is made of.

Which should you buy?

  • Choose solid gold if you want an heirloom, or something you'll never take off, and the budget is there.
  • Choose gold plated if you want the look for everyday wear, like to switch styles, or want to try a bigger chain without a big investment.

How to make plating last

  • Take it off before swimming, especially in chlorinated pools and hot tubs.
  • Keep it away from perfume, cologne and cleaning products.
  • Wipe it with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
  • Store pieces separately so they don't scratch each other.

And if the gold finish on a Dubai Collections piece wears away, flakes or peels within 12 months of normal wear, our 12-Month Replacement Guarantee covers it.
