How to Layer a Cross Necklace With a Chain

Layering a plain chain with a cross necklace is one of the easiest ways to make your jewelry look intentional. It adds depth without looking busy, as long as you follow a few simple rules.

Rule 1: Leave a 2″ gap

The biggest layering mistake is two chains that are too close in length. They sit on top of each other and tangle. Keep at least 2″ between them. The easiest pairing: a 20″ plain chain with a 22″ or 24″ cross. The plain chain sits at the collarbone, and the cross hangs clear below it.

Rule 2: Shorter chain, thinner chain

Let the cross be the focus. Pair it with a slimmer chain on top, like a 2mm or 2.5mm rope, so the eye goes to the pendant. If you want the shorter chain to be bolder, keep the cross chain slim instead. Two heavy chains together is a lot.

Rule 3: Match your tones

Stick to one gold tone per stack. A 24K yellow cross with a 14K white chain can look like two different outfits. Every Dubai Collections product lists its plating (14K white, 18K or 24K yellow), so matching is simple.

Rule 4: Mix textures

Two different link styles look better than two identical ones. A rope chain's twist next to a smooth box or figaro chain gives the stack some contrast. Our tube and flat crosses both pair well with a rope chain.

A stack that always works

  • Top: 2mm diamond cut rope, 20″
  • Bottom: a cross necklace on a figaro or curb chain, 24″

When you buy any cross necklace and add a second chain, you save 15% on the chain. The discount is applied at checkout.

Keeping it tangle-free

Put the chains on one at a time, longest first, and give them a quick shake so they settle. Take them off separately at night, and store them apart so they don't knot.
