Men's Chain Length Guide: What Size Chain Should You Get?
The most common question we get is simple: what length should I buy? A chain that's too short feels tight and disappears under a collar. Too long and it swings around your stomach. Here's how to get it right the first time.
Start with your T-shirt size
Most men don't know their chain length, but everyone knows their shirt size. Bigger frames need a little more length for the chain to sit in the same place, so your T-shirt size is a reliable starting point:
- S: 18″ sits at the base of the neck
- M: 20″ sits at the collarbone
- L: 22″ sits just below the collarbone, the most popular length for men
- XL: 24″ sits on the upper chest
- 2XL: 26″ sits mid chest
- 3XL: 28″ sits lower on the chest for a statement drop
If you're between sizes, or you have a thicker neck, go one size up.
Plain chain or cross?
A plain chain looks best sitting on or just below the collarbone, which is 20″–22″ for most men. A cross necklace needs more room so the pendant can hang flat on the chest instead of sitting in the hollow of your throat. For crosses, most men go 22″–24″.
How width changes the look
Width matters as much as length. A thin 2mm rope reads as clean and understated at any length. A heavy Cuban link looks bolder the shorter it's worn, while a 14mm Cuban at 24″ is a full statement piece. If you're buying your first chain, a mid-width chain like our 5mm figaro at 22″ is hard to get wrong.
A quick way to check at home
Take a piece of string or a phone charger cable, wrap it around your neck at the length you're considering, and look in the mirror. Where the string sits is where the chain will sit.
